Hero
Big thanks to my buddy Derek for pointing me towards this amazing and inspirational story. Derek is a media enthusiast and a Steve Job fan boy - nothing "Apple" slips by his radar. He forwarded me this story of documentary film maker Martyn Hollingworth who cycled along side the hero of our story, Jane Tomlinson, as she embarked on a 64 day trans -America bicycle ride.
Jane was diagnosed with incurable metastatic breast cancer in August of 2000 - her prognosis was to survive only 6 months. Jane's response has been to involve herself in a remarkable series of endurance races and events, each designed to raise awareness and money for the treatment of the disease. Martyn Hollingworth rode with and documented Jane through her 3700 mile cross country trek from San Francisco to New York and it can be viewed on his web site in flash. A short introduction to Jane's motivational story can be found here on Apple's web site.
At 42 Jane continues to defy her prognosis and overcome the daily obstacles of her disease and treatment. She is the only person with incurable cancer to complete a full Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a full 26 mile marathon – to be done inside 17 hours). Has completed two half Ironmans, the London Marathon 3 times (She’s the only person to do the marathon while on Chemotherapy), the New York Marathon and three London Triathlons. Jane's mission, carried on with the help of her website Jane's Appeal, is to show people with a terminal prognosis that they can still lead an active and fruitful life - death doesn't arrive with the prognosis. An inspiration to all and a true Hero.
